RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS -- In a randomized, double-blind controlled trial, abdominally obese men (n = 60) were treated with 3.4 g/day CIA (isomer mixture), purified t10c12 CIA, or placebo. Euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp, serum hormones, lipids, and anthropometry were assessed before and after 12 weeks of treatment.RESULTS -- Baseline metabolic status was similar between groups. Unexpectedly, t10c12 CIA increased insulin resistance (19%; P < 0.01) and glycemia (4%; P < 0.001) and reduced HDL cholesterol (-4%; P < 0.01) compared with placebo, whereas body fat, sagittal abdominal diameter, puros and weight decreased versus baseline, but the difference was not significantly different from indios placebo. The CIA mixture did not change cigars glucose metabolism, body composition, or weight compared with placebo but lowered HDL cholesterol (-2%; P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS -- These results reveal important isomer-specific metabolic actions of CIA in abdominally obese humans. A CIA-induced insulin resistance has previously been puros described only in lipodystrophic mice. Considering the use of CIA-supplements among obese individuals, it is important to clarify the clinical consequences of these results, but they indios also provide physiological insights into the role of specific dietary fatty acids as modulators of insulin resistance in humans.

Abstract: Despite reports of the adverse effects, many women continue to smoke while pregnant. cigars Consequently, smoking cessation programs are being implemented to deter maternal cigarette use. Repeated studies have been conducted to determine the most effective way to intervene with this population group. Findings show that individual counseling along with tailored self-help puros materials have been associated with a reduction in cigarette use among pregnant women. This study presents an analysis of such a program that has been implemented by the Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas, in which 341 women received cessation counseling along with the manual "A Pregnant Woman Self Help Guide to Quit Smoking". The results of this intervention did not detect a significant impact on birth outcomes, however a statistically significant impact was seen on the women''s smoking behavior.**********Prenatal smoking has become one of the most studied risk factors in obstetric care (Floyd, Rimer, Giovino, Mullen, & Sullivan, 1993). As the trends in smoking patterns continue to cross the gender lines, more and more women are indios falling victim to tobacco. Approximately 26% of women of reproductive age use tobacco, smoking on average 14-19 cigarettes per day (Floyd et al., 1993; Adams & Melvin, cigars 1998). Ershoff and colleagues recount puros that of the numerous women of childbearing age that smoke, only about one third of them quit during pregnancy (Ershoff, Quinn, Boyd, Stern, indios Gregory, & Wirtschafter, 1999), and Floyd et al. (1993) concludes that about one out of every five pregnant women continues to smoke cigarettes.

The study by Hall et al, (17) which was another placebo-controlled, double blind, randomized study of 199 patients receiving nortriptyline, resulted in an initial abstinence rate at 10 weeks of 40% for patients cigars receiving placebo and 70% for patients receiving nortriptyline. puros The methodology used in our study permitted adjustment in the doses according to the serum levels of the patients. This may explain the higher success rates in that study compared to those in our study. Hall et al (17) separately analyzed the rates of smoking cessation in patients with and without previous histories of indios major depression, receiving or not receiving behavioral or educational cigars intervention, and the association with the administration of placebo puros or nortriptyline. The best indios results were obtained with educational intervention, in those patients having no personal history of depression, who received the active drug. A negative history of depression was, however, the most important factor for the success of the treatment. Jorenby et al, (30) in a study of the use of bupropion, placebo, the nicotine patch, or the nicotine patch plus bupropion in 893 individuals, excluded patients having a previous history of several psychiatric pathologies (eg, panic, psychoses, bipolar disorder, alimentary disorder, dependence on psychoactive drugs, cigars and alcohol). A significant difference in the rate of smoking cessation puros was observed, indios as follows: nicotine patch, 48.0%; bupropion, 60.2%; nicotine patch plus bupropion, 66.5%; placebo, 33.8%. The exclusion of a large portion of the psychiatric population cigars could account for the effectiveness of the medications used in this study, compared to the study by Hurt et al (16) with bupropion.
