Sarah Millermon, an 18-year-old from Stockton, CA, knows the dangers of cancer first-hand.When she was a baby, she developed leukemia, a blood-related cancer. She underwent chemotherapy until she was two. And, while she''s been cancer-free ever since, the prospect of por a relapse is never far from her mind.Still, as a teen, Sarah went on to smoke a pack a day, putting herself at risk for cancer of the lungs, mouth, esophagus, larranaga and 2000 larynx, stomach, pancreas, kidney, and bladder."When you''re addicted to cigarets, you can rationalize anything," says Sarah, who hasn''t smoked in three months. "I''d tell myself: `Well, I beat cancer once. I can do it again.'' Now I look back and think I must have been crazy." Q: Health experts estimate that 3,000 kids become established cigarette smokers each day. What are the smoking trends you are witnessing among kids today?A: In the 1980s, the cigars decreasing smoking rates seen por and larranaga in the United States among adults were also observed among youth. But in the late ''80s that changed. Rates for adolescents and teens shot up, peaking in 1997. Aggressive tobacco 2000 marketing aimed at young people was unprecedented. Cigarettes were cheap and affordable for kids. Retailers were not enforcing cigars youth-access laws. But since 1997, efforts by antitobacco and public-health groups have begun por to show results. Critics have argued, however, that flavored snuff is also por especially attractive to children.A UST rep was not available for comment at press time, but company execs previously have said they were not aware of plans for any sweet-flavor extensions.The arrival of Kessler, combined with the upcoming initiatives and a name change to U.S. Smokeless Tobacco--to align more closely with its vision--likely will squelch merger larranaga and 2000 overtures from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, per wholesale and retail sources.
