The guy had a neat little place with a table stacked with boxes. Colorful Romeo y Julietas. Masculine Cohibas. Partagas. Montecristos. We opened different boxes for a while, enjoying the luxury of it all, before settling on Cohiba Robustos, a five-inch cohiba cigar with a good heft, packed neatly in a dovetailed cedar box. Cuba only began making Cohibas after the revolution, and they say Fidel smoked Cohibas before he gave up cohiba cigars. A box sells for nearly $230. I paid $40 U.S. and figured I''d worry about customs later.

Q: When did marketing campaigns aimed at youth, such as the Joe Camel ads, hit the scene?A: Joe Camel was "born" in 1988--a product of a sophisticated R.J. Reynolds marketing plan aimed at youth. But Joe Camel was just one of numerous tobacco-company youth-oriented ad campaigns that reversed the downward smoking trends among youth. Smoking rates have now begun to decrease, in part because of highly effective antitobacco programs. States such as Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Florida, Maine, and Oregon have been leaders. The Master Tobacco Settlement has provided financial support to states for tobacco control. The tragedy is that we lost the decade of the ''90s to Big Tobacco. macanudocigars The good news is that Joe Camel "died" in this country in the late 1990s as part of the Master Tobacco Settlement. Some good things have come out of the Joe Camel debacle and the upsurge in smoking rates among kids. The Indiana state macanudocigars legislature, for instance, decided to spend a large amount of money (about $32 million annually) from the Master Tobacco Settlement on youth-oriented tobacco control. Remarkably, most states are not using significant revenues from the Tobacco Settlement on tobacco control.
