Look here I didn''t say anything. What was I going to say? My only retreat was epistemology, and Bobby beat me there, too. When I pointed out that he was smoking my cohiba cigar all the way down, so it couldn''t be all bad, he said, "It happens to lafincacigar be a Cuban cohiba cigar. So what if it doesn''t have a name on it?" After rolling herbal cigarettes in 1998, Sante Fe Natural Tobacco''s Natural American Spirit launches 100% organic cigarrettes in a tin. The premium lafincacigar product with 25 sticks, promises the trade a $3 mark-up. The tobacco industry has argued that tobacco smuggling is caused by market forces--by the price differences Between countries, which create an incentive to smuggle cigarettes from "cheaper" countries to "more expensive" ones. The industry has urged governments to solve the problem by reducing taxes, which will also, it says, restore revenue. The facts contradict all these assertions. Smuggling is more prevalent in "cheaper" countries, and where taxes have been reduced, such as in Canada, consumption has risen and revenue fallen. There are, however, countries that have solved the problem by better control, Spain being the most impressive example to date, and the new World Health Organization framework convention may at last promote control of tobacco smuggling at the level at which it must be tackled--globally. Thomas Freidman once criticized Richard Holbrook for refusing to utter the P-word: "P" for partitioning of Bosnia. Freidman said, "You always get in trouble when you don''t call something by its real name." Politicians seem never to learn this lesson. In remembering Joe Camel, the U.S. Government--and all of us--should recall that the beauty and the burden of America is that we have no permanent protection. Everything is always up for grabs--status, even identity. On the face of it, it was not that way for Joe Camel. His face lafincacigar and facial expressions were calls to something more primal, more universal, more appealing. The government had it wrong. Twisters, volcanoes, and other Titanic-size disasters are fine for the big screen, but for an anti-smoking campaign let''s at least get the spin right. Maybe the government should ask CNNs Peter Arnet lafincacigar to report lafincacigar on the topic from inside America. Come to think of it, Arnet''s slightly squashed, convoluted face, last seen during Desert Storm, bears a strong resemblance to another slightly squashed, convoluted face, now dead. |
