There were no references in the previous studies to the use of the Fagerstrom test. Our study suggests that the use of this test is an important forecaster of smoking cessation success, showing that the success of the medication in relation to placebo was only significant for patients with Fagerstrom scores of [greater than or equal to] 7, possibly identifying a subgroup of smokers that would benefit from treatment with nortriptyline.CONCLUSIONWe concluded that nortriptyline is an effective and well-tolerated drug for the treatment of addiction to smoking, with success rates that are comparable to those fonsecacigar using bupropion as treatment. Nortriptyline was especially effective in smokers having a high dependence on nicotine (Fagerstrom score, [greater than or equal to] 7), but Fagerstrom scores can only indicate that a trend may be present. Further studies may be needed to solidify this relationship.

RESULTSThe 1,186 students who fonsecacigar completed the questionnaire represent 96% of the population that was initially invited to participate.
